Bias Detox: Ep 3: Microaggressions Unmasked: How to Recognize and Avoid Them
Welcome to Bias Detox, the podcast series with the Morris Perspective Podcast, where we clean out the mental clutter that's holding us back. No sage burning required. I'm your host Connie Morris and today we're diving into a topic that's small in name but big in impact, microaggressions. Do you know those seemingly small comments or actions that on the surface might seem harmless but actually carry a lot of weight? Yep, those are microaggressions. Think of them like those tiny paper cuts. You might not notice them at first, but after a while, they really start to sting.
In today's episode, we're going to break down what microaggressions are, how to recognize them, and most importantly, how to avoid them in your everyday interactions. So let's get ready to clean up our communication habits and make sure we're not unintentionally giving anyone those dreaded paper cuts.
Simply put, microaggressions are subtle, often unintentional comments or actions that demean or marginalize someone because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other aspects of their identity. They might seem minor to the person doing them, but have a significant impact on the person receiving them. We'll go through common examples and scenarios to help you spot and avoid them.
Recognizing microaggressions requires paying attention to the impact of your words and actions, not just your intentions. If you notice that something you said makes someone uncomfortable, it's worth reflecting on why that might be or how you can avoid similar comments in the future. Let's work together to make our communication more mindful and inclusive.
Thank you for joining me, Connie Morris, as we work to make our communication a little kinder and our world a little brighter. Keep reflecting, keep learning, and let's keep those microaggressions in check. Until next time, stay mindful, stay empathetic, and stay committed.
